In this paper we analyze the opinions of 400 subjects from Santiago de Chile about which geographical varieties of Spanish have a greater or lesser degree of linguistic correctness, and which factors influence these opinions. Our findings reveal that the greater degree of correctness perceived in the varieties of Peru and Spain, and the lesser degree of correctness perceived in Chilean Spanish, depend both of linguistic and non-linguistic factors (correspondence of these varieties with the linguistic profile of an ideal model of correct Spanish and social valuation of their speakers, respectively).
