Trade and market in the Andean world have been a topic of debate. By employing the same substantive focus of economic anthropology used in the analysis of the Inca economy, we examine key information about these transactions in the Lupaca of the 16th century. Trade and market (Alatha, Ccatu and Haurucu) had their own cultural forms in this Aymara world. The economic analysis and ethnohistoric information available are conclusive in regard to the complementarity of direct (verticality) and indirect (exchange) access in the social reproduction of the Lupaca social system.
