This paper exposes the image of Latin America in the thought of Gabriela Mistral, reflected in her private letters that she sent to Alfonso Reyes, Victoria Ocampo, Joaquin Garcia Monge and Esther de Caceres, intellectuals who, like her, struggled to understand and solve the dilemmas facing in the region during the first half of the twentieth century. It is elaborated from a qualitative approach, collecting and studying the data contained in its intimate correspondence. The points to be discussed are: her ideas about the region, her internationalist approaches, her claims from the League of Nations, her supporting to the literature as a diffuser means and her notions about United States. The results allow us to conclude that Mistral thought the region not only from a romantic, poetic and idyllic point of view, but also realistic.
