Just as is the case for other sciences, geography has transitioned in the last few decades. The Revista Geografia Norte Grande (RGNG) has channeled and disseminated the most important research in geographical science produced in Latin America. In order to explore the work published in this journal we created a database containing details of all articles published from 1974-2004. Data was analyzed for three periods: 1974-1990, 1991-2005 and 2006-2014. This analysis made it possible to identify the initial local nature of the journal, which then opened to more progressive geographic themes. We were also able to determine the type of geographic research and thought during these periods, in order to evaluate the consequences of the work undertaken and project the new questions that will define the evolution of this discipline.
