The importance and range of rediscovering the pictorial art of icon painting are yet to be discovered. Nowadays icons are painted all over the world, workshops and university courses on their theological meaning are organised. However, modern research lacks an appropriate methodological framework that can articulate the two dimensions of this phenomenon: the aesthetic dimension and the theological one. This article aims at contributing to the formulation of this methodological framework by defining and establishing a relation between aesthetic and theological dimension of icons.
