This essay looks at 2 publications in prose by Reina Maria Rodriguez (1954): Varieties of Galiano (2008) and Other Mythologies (2012) from the perspective of the memory. I can say, after a preliminary look at these books, that there is evidence of necrophilia in them: mention is made of the dead and the assumption is that they must be safeguarded so that life can go on without relinquishing anything left behind. Nevertheless, memory is more than the sum of the parts of a wreckage. It is-apparently and above all-a social and cultural construct, a kind of capacity which occurs in the crossroads of discourses. But that is not the end of the matter: memory can be official; it can be traumatized; it can also be alternative. The above mentioned works of Reina Maria Rodriguez belong to the last category. We shall attempt to show this on the basis of the experiences narrated in both texts. These experiences stem from the years called The Special Period and took place mostly in Cuba in the decade of the 90s. Even though these books have become indispensable reading for having recovered a time and space, they have the added value of being written by the most important Cuban poet today. They are not poetic books and yet they are; neither are they merely books of prose and yet still they are. They are hybrid, unique, disquieting, full of pain, anger and despair - these are some of the words we can use to describe them. These books have challenged the author to extend the limits of writing.
