Mineral concentrators are designed from preliminary geological data, and are therefore subject to geological uncertainty. This uncertainty has a demonstrable impact on the mining lifecycle, and has motivated stochastic strategic mine planning algorithms. The current paper describes how these algorithms may be extended to consider mineral processing operations in conjunction with open-pit mining operations. In particular, the paper describes an effective way to incorporate variable concentrator feed grade into these algorithms, which is the first step toward more elaborate representations of mineral concentrators. The resulting framework will be able to connect geological data to alternate configurations of the downstream resources, hence comparing the benefit of each configuration, and the corresponding capital investments. Sample computations are presented, comparing the net present value and utilisation for several different mineral processing capacities.

| Funding for the current work is provided by the Chilean government, through its FONDECYT - Iniciacion programme for young researchers (Project No 11140078). The current work has also benefitted from discussions with members of the COMSO group at McGill University (Dr Luis Montiel and Dr Amina Lamghari, in particular) that specialise in open-pit stochastic mine planning. Gratitude is given to the director of the COSMO group (Professor Roussos Dimitrakopoulos) for his support and feedback in working toward this paper. An earlier version of this paper was published in the MetSoc of CIM proceedings of the 54th Annual Conference of Metallurgists held in conjunction with AMCAA - America's Conference on Al Alloys, from August 23rd to 26th of 2015, (ISBN 978-1-926872-32-2, Paper 8818, pages 1-11). |
