Considering the ongoing paradigm shift of large scale solar plants from central inverters to multistring inverters, new associated logistic requirements have highlighted the need to lower the weight of power converters without compromising efficiency and reliability. To meet this need, Silicon carbide based semiconductors are considered an enabling technology as they allow weight reduction in power converters while improving efficiency thanks to the ability to switch faster with lower losses, alongside with outstanding thermal characteristics. Nonetheless, although it is well known that the use of Silicon carbide improves converters power density, it is not an easy task to assess or estimate the reduction quantitatively. To tackle this problem, a design methodology considering grid connected PV converters, and with special focus on weight, efficiency and rated power is presented. Simulations have been programmed in Matlab and the corresponding results are provided.
