The chamantos and mantas corraleras of Donihue (Region VI) represents one of the most prestigious Appelations of Origin of Chile since 2014. In this article, we will look into the process by which the chamanto went from a relatively secondary fabric at the end of the 19th century to the most appreciated Chilean weaving a century later, transforming itself into a garment of high figuration in public, religious and political areas. The different actors that drive chamanto in its consolidation as a pledge of prestige during the twentieth century are detected. For this purpose, the entire written press of the Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins Region will be used as source, from 1917 (date on which the first information on Donihue's chamantos appears) to the present day. To this, information is added from the INAPI Archive, as well as information rescued from Chilean folk literature, in the field of criollista literature, compilations of Chilean folklore and FUCOA collection of peasant tales.
