This paper examines the role played by the political models of ancient Athens, Sparta and Rome in the discussion on the best way of government in Chile during the early years of the Republic. It proposes that the history and political systems of classical antiquity became relevant paradigms in the debates about the different Republican alternatives opened to the independent nation. It also analyzes the antidemocratic aspect of this literature and its impact on the particular character of Chilean republicanism. The problem studied concerns the discussion about political languages in the early years of the republic, the presence among them of a republican language and the relation between republicanism and liberalism.
