INTRODUCTION. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is one of the leading public health problems worldwide, specifically in Latin America where in the last 12 years new infections have increased by 21%(1). METHODS. Integrative review aimed at analyzing and summarizing the main HIV studies in Latin America in the last 8 years. RESULTS. The number of new HIV cases in Latin America continues to increase. A clear example is Chile, where the incidence rate has doubled in the last ten years(2). The emergence of the new COVID-19 pandemic has had negative consequences for people living with HIV (PLHIV), such as delays in their medical check-ups, diagnosis or the decrease in new research in this area(3). Latin America remains far from reaching the 95-95-95 target set by UNAIDS for the year 2030 and, therefore, there are still significant barriers to access to treatment and stigma associated with the chronic health condition, which hinders the goal of non-transmissibility(4). CONCLUSIONS. Health personnel have a significant challenge in this matter, such as providing comprehensive carefree of prejudice, welcoming people living with HIV to improve treatment adherence, educating and guiding efforts to keep their controls and treatments up to date, and contributing new knowledge through research aimed at containing this epidemic.
