Within the framework of cultural history and consumption, this article studies the incorporation of the bathroom in Chilean home, mainly in Santiago and Valparaíso, in the context of the change of paradigm of health from the miasmatic to the bacteriological theory. The offer in the market of different artifacts and objects oriented to the systematic practice of personal hygiene in the privacy of this domestic space, was an essential part of the modification of the hygienic habits of the population. Based on the assumption that advertisements constitute cultural disseminators that reveal some aspects of the market, through the review of advertising in the Chilean press between 1850 and 1950 it is proposed to study which hygiene-oriented products were offered through the press and under what discourses. This article proposes that the advertising discourse contributed to the dissemination of new bacteriological knowledge among its readers.
