The Chango flag was created on November 30, 2020, just over a month after the legal recognition of the Chango people was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Chile. As such, it represents the efforts of a people that had been considered disappeared and whose re-emergence process has been questioned by broad sectors of society who do not understand how the former fishermen and shore gatherers are becoming indigenous today. In conclusion, it can be stated that both the flag and other elements of its identity, mostly associated with maritime life, are part of a heritage process that has been seen as necessary to advance recognition, either by rescuing ancient elements, recreating alternative cultural forms, as well as innovating in sociocultural processes that make them feel and be seen as a different people. All of the above as part of a process of re-emergence or ethnogenesis that has been going on since 2000 and that has resulted in the current presence of the Chango people throughout the country.
