PurposeThis study examines key facilitation activities within good-functioning PLN and their role in mobilizing knowledge across schools participating in Chile's new public education system. Analyzing how facilitation activities drive three knowledge mobilization processes-diffusion, integration and innovation-this study reveals the fact that good-functioning PLNs facilitate activities that grant greater agency to network participants and that the knowledge generated is adapted, thereby influencing the educational routines of the schools that comprise them.Design/methodology/approachThis research is part of a three-year sequential mixed-methods study. It begins with surveys of 56 PLNs to identify good-functioning networks, followed by in-depth case studies of seven selected networks. In each case, interviews, focus groups and follow-up questionnaires explore how knowledge is mobilized (115 participants from 7 PLNs from 5 Public Local Services of Education).FindingsGood-functioning networks encourage active participation, with members sharing experiences and fostering ownership. The knowledge generated is adapted to local contexts, ensuring relevance and impact. These facilitation practices strengthen collaboration and sustain knowledge mobilization, driving continuous improvements in both learning outcomes and student well-being.Practical implicationsThe study found that PLNs with active facilitation, particularly those focusing on evidence-based strategy design and collaboration, mobilized knowledge into their schools. Also, knowledge mobilization varies across PLNs, with diffusion, integration and innovation showing different patterns depending on the type and frequency of facilitation activities. The findings of this study suggest that those facilitating PLN collaboration should prioritize activities that foster participation and actively engage their members.Originality/valueThis study offers new insights into network facilitation, highlighting the role of facilitators in mobilizing knowledge and promoting collaboration. It provides practical recommendations for strengthening professional learning and building more effective educational networks.
