After almost two decades of discussions, the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement) was adopted on 19 June 2023. This paper addresses Chile's most relevant concern under the new treaty: zonal management measures, including the creation of marine protected areas. It analyzes how the new regime will relate to existing treaties and organizations with competence over marine biodiversity, especially regional fisheries bodies and the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Organization. The article also proposes elements to balancing long-term national conservation and economic interests in the Southeast Pacific.
