In this article we use the data from PRECAVES XXI to offer a perceptual dialectology (Preston 1981, 1986) analysis of the perceptions that Chilean speakers have of the educated varieties of Spanish. To this end, we answer the following three central questions: (1) do Chilean speakers identify or recognize the different educated varieties of Spanish?; (2) how do Chilean speakers perceive the proximity or distance of the educated varieties of Spanish in relation to their own variety?; and (3) do Chilean speakers perceive one variety as better than the others? 108 subjects took part in this study who were stratified by sex, age, and educational level. Our findings show that only 53.4 % of Chilean speakers correctly or nearly correctly identified the varieties of Spanish. Chilean speakers regard their own variety as different from most of the other varieties and, also, state that some varieties are better than others.
