Abstract

Quebrada Honda drains a small basin with a strong urbanization pattern in Puerto Varas, southern Chile. Urban growth and unregulated interventions—including deforestation and wetland filling—have severely compromised the ecosystem services that this area used to provide, particularly in terms of flood control and water quality management. Since 2016, a multidisciplinary team led by Patagua has been working on a collaborative initiative, called Quebrada Park, that aims to restore the creek and wetland, as well as their deteriorated surroundings, so as to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient urban environment. The project is based on four key pillars: sustainable urban drainage, urban nature, public space, and community engagement. Initial governmental funding was directed toward the latter, allowing for an extensive process of participatory activities and environmental education. Through this process, several tons of waste were removed from the area by the local community and hundreds of native trees and bushes were planted to control soil erosion, as well as to contribute to a greener and more biodiverse city. Subsequent public and private alliances have led to the design of a nature-based solution to recover the wetlands’ rainwater storage capacity, and to the development of a master plan for an urban park. The park is conceived as an integrated restoration initiative that aims for the ongoing recovery and protection of this urban nature hotspot, as for social integration through the habilitation of high-quality public spaces.
