This paper aims to correlate two reference frameworks within the realm of Risk Management, namely: the "risk and opportunity management" competency as defined in the International Competence Baseline version 4.0 (ICB 4.0) by the International Project Management Association (IPMA), and the Critical Control Management Model of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). The ICB 4.0 represents a global framework for competencies in project management, wherein the management of risks and opportunities is highlighted as a key competency for project managers. Meanwhile, the ICMM's Critical Control Management Model is specific to the mining industry and focuses on the identification of critical controls to prevent or mitigate catastrophic undesired events, especially those causing fatal accidents in global mining operations. Considering the aforementioned, this article seeks to identify and analyze potential correlations and synergies between these two approaches. It is anticipated that the findings of this study will offer valuable insights for professionals in project management and, specifically, in the management of catastrophic risks.
