The present research is centered around a sulfide deposit located in the Coquimbo region, 240 kilometers north of Santiago, Chile. This project consists of a series of works aimed at updating (due to obsolescence) the electrical and control components of the Coarse Mineral Transport System, with the goal of improving the reliability of mineral transport to ensure greater copper production. This Mining Group requires that all major projects be carried out using a Project Execution Plan (PEP). The purpose of the PEP is to document how the project will be carried out and to communicate it to key stakeholders. Although the PEP for this project includes a section on “Risk Management,” it is focused more on communicating what will be done, rather than defining a robust “Risk Management Plan.” In the Chilean Mining Industry, there exists a particular paradox, as it shows outstanding performance in accidents with injury (of lesser severity). However, one worker dies every month, which is why there is a need to focus this “Risk Management Plan” on those risks that cause fatalities to people.
