This article shows that the desire to die can be legally protected in two ways: (1) by releasing liability from the healthcare personnel who perform euthanasia or assist suicide, without establishing rights for patients or (2) by establishing authentic rights for patients with respect to euthanasia and assisted suicide. Both hypotheses are used to classify the main legislations in this matter in the world.
