The research delves into the ritual and ontological dimensions of coping with affliction and the devotional character that trance [and possession] between enslaved Africans and descendants in America., and whose meaning was in the emotional appeasement of suffering as a possibility of reunion, reborn or sunrise. The article studies the ritual forms of religious coping with [colonial] misfortune and the sense of family remembrance that implied the devotion and suffering of the lashing punishment. The research approach is developed from the cultural approach of symbolic action and ritual behaviors deployed in the transit and suffering of life crises. From an ontological turn, the research analyzes the testimonies inscribed in the documentation produced by the Court of the Inquisition against Africans prosecuted for the crime of blasphemy during the 17th-18th centuries, proposing a reading of the physical suffering from an initiatory and symbolic sense of religious remembrance of kinship, native land and divine powers.
