This article addresses the issue of student fare in public transportation in Santiago, Chile during the dictatorship. The liberalization of services, driven since 1979 by the neoliberal policies of the regime characterized by fare and route freedom, turned regulations on reduced fare into a contentious issue between authorities and transport providers. We will describe howthis conflict played a significant role in the policy debate for the sector, shaping the relationship between the government and the collective transportation guild. We will observe how the studentfare highlighted the limitations of liberalization and how this dispute affected the Santiago Metro, which only granted the benefit in 1990.Through press monitoring, guild magazines, and official documents, we will review the contradictions and issues that the imposition of the neoliberal model encountered in public transportation services, particularly with a specific user segment like students.
