Abstract

INTRODUCTION. To control the COVID-19 pandemic, safe and effective vaccines were developed. In Chile, 90.7% of the target population had received at least one dose by December 2021,and bivalent vaccine coverage has subsequently decreased. While the international literature describes facilitators and barriers of the vaccination process, evidence specific to Chile is scarce. OBJECTIVE. To describe facilitators of and barriers to adherence to COVID-19 vaccination in health personnel in a hospital setting. METHODOLOGY. Descriptive cross-sectional study of a sample of 350 clinical staff of a public hospital. Demographic and occupational variables, facilitators, and barriers to adherence to vaccination against COVID-19 were collected. Qualitative variables were described with frequencies and percentages; for quantitative variables, mean standard deviation was calculated after testing for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The data were analyzed with the SPSS v. 24.0 statistical program. RESULTS. The average age was 37.9±9.5 years, with the highest percentage being women (70.3%). Adherence was 62.6%. The prevalent facilitator was 2= "Belief that all health workers should be vaccinated" (18.2%) and the prevalent barrier was 5= "Doubts about side effects, fear of vaccine-related disease" (23.4%). CONCLUSION. Facilitators and barriers reported in this study are similar to those reported in the international literature. Knowledge of the facilitators of and barriers to adherence to COVID-19 vaccination in health personnel will allow the development of more effective educational programs.
