Introduction: The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual, intersex and other gender/sexual minority (LGBTQAI+) community has a high risk of presenting suicidal behaviors (SB); Higher education (HE) students are also in a particularly vulnerable position. The aim of the present review was to determine the frequency of CB among LGBTQAI+ - HE students, and identify associated risk factors. Methods: PubMed, PsychInfo, MEDLINE, SciELO, and LILACS were searched to retrieve quantitative studies assessing prevalence, odds ratios, and/or risk factors for CB in LGBTQAI+ - HE students. Results: A total of 23 studies were identified that met the inclusion criteria. Overall frequencies of CB were higher in LGBTQAI+ students compared to cisgender heterosexual students. Bisexual, trans, non-binary, and potentially pansexual HE students were particularly at risk. The most frequently reported associated risk factors were being a victim of abuse (sexual or other), frustrated feelings of belonging, and perception of being a burden. Conclusions: In general, the prevalence of CB in LGBTQAI+ students is higher than in heterosexual cisgender HE students. There are currently substantial gaps in information on this topic among HE students belonging to the ever-evolving LGBTQAI+ population, and the need for more research is imperative.
