Public housing in Latin America is mostly geared towards homeownership, regardless of the effective possibilities in terms of need, affordability, coverage, or willingness to acquire housing. This results in the majority of the population, particularly lower-income groups having to rent or share housing, rooms, or plots or invade land, often in risky or distant locations. Rental conditions are often precarious and sharers are family relatives. There are numerous housing non-for-profit organisations in Latin America working to improve the living conditions of the urban poor.
