Abstract

Objective: To evaluate emotional intelligence based on the level of physical activity presented by second-year students enrolled in the Physical Education program at the Central University of Chile, Santiago campus. Materials and Methods: A crosssectional study was conducted at the Central University of Chile between March and June 2024. Twenty-six students participated (20 men and 6 women), adults (21.89 +/- 3.85 years) classified as eutrophic (BMI = 24.64 +/- 3.36) and grouped according to their level of physical activity into a moderate group (IPAQ = 1315.83 +/- 56.55) and a high group (IPAQ = 2153.20 +/- 449.20). Additionally, emotional intelligence was determined using the Trait Meta-Mood Scale in its short form (TMMS-19). The statistical analysis employed the Student's t-test along with Pearson's correlation, with effect size determined using Cohen's d. Results: The high physical activity group showed a significantly lower level of emotional repair (p p = 0.01; d = 1.14) as well as higher energy expenditure (p p < 0.001; d = 2.64) compared to the moderate physical activity group. Physical activity was directly associated with attention (r r = 0.41; p = 0.04) and inversely associated with emotional repair (r r =-0.42; p = 0.03). Conclusion: There is a lower level of emotional repair and a higher level of energy expenditure in physically active university students. However, further studies are needed to provide a better understanding of these findings in various socio-cultural contexts.
