This article investigates the creation of the General Cemetery of Santiago, referring to the historical process that culminated in its construction, to the way in which its inhabitants reacted to its opening and to the way in which they were linked to it. The emphasis is placed on the change, both in materiality and mentality, which derive from the confluence of Christianity, enlightenment and romanticism and that make themselves evident in this milestone.
