The Brentano influence on Husserl’s phenomenology is an established fact. Husserl first major work (1891) did not hide his adherence to the Brentano method, against which, however, he rebelled in his next work, the Logical Investigations (1900/01), and more explicitly in the second edition (1913). Since then, it has been emphasized that phenomenology emerges from, and against, Brentano psychology as a method but, frequently, other important criticisms are overlooked. This paper aims to investigate these criticisms, going beyond the methodologic question. To this end, Brentano’s ideas are exposed, followed by Husserl’s criticism, qualifying them o correcting them when necessary.
