Social differences between men and women are visible in different planes of language. It has been observed that women tend to be more conservative, use more standard forms than men and that they are more receptible to prestige varieties and norms. This alpaper analyzes lexical innovation of both genders, in particular, in relation to the use of English loanwords, which is considered a prestige variety in Chile. To this effect, articles of four Chilean newspapers were compiled and the quantity of neologisms used by both genders and their motivations were analyzed. The percentage of neologisms in general was higher in articles written by men, while women used more English loanwords. This finding confirms that men tend to be more innovative, while women are more susceptible to prestige varieties.
