This article contributes to the deepening of knowledge on domestic service during the nineteenth century, but above all to a topic little studied in Latin American historiography, such as that of private coachmen. A labor space belonging to the world of servants, but occupied only by men, and which became increasingly relevant in a growing urban space. The objective of this article is to understand the most relevant characteristics of the work of private coachmen during the second half of the nineteenth century and the perceptions held about them in the city of Santiago de Chile. Methodologically, it is an exploratory research and responds to the historiographic line of everyday life, so the main source will be the judicial file of José Tomás Sanchez (1875), complemented with other primary sources, such as the newspaper El Ferrocarril -main journalistic medium of the country during this period-, judicial files on coachmen, memoirs of political actors of the time and documentation collected from the Municipality of Santiago.
