During the 1980s, the Mexican feminist movement, until then very limited in number of militants, experienced a moment of inflection, profound transformation and expansion. In many ways, this process was linked to the reaction of mobilized women from the popular sectors to the terrible crisis that hit the most disadvantaged sectors of Mexican society. These women, supported by a sector of civil feminists, began to participate in events and activities aimed at members of the feminist movement. In 1987, a conflictive clash between these two worlds took place during the IV Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encounter in the city of Taxco. Based on the testimonies gathered in interviews published by the magazine fem, the magazine Doble Jornada and the memory of the IV EFLAC, this paper aims to reconstruct the context of the formation of organized women's groups, characterize their modes of militancy prior to the Encuentro, differentiate the positions of the different groups of militants on feminism before, during and after the event and examine the debates that took place on feminism as a political practice, the fractures and the forms of discrimination that operated within the movement. Finally, it will discuss the consensuses that were reached in Taxco on the basis of the creation of a joint and transformative strategy that did not ignore the differences in women's demands in terms of class, race, age or sexual orientation.
