As one of the most popular writers in 19th century Spain, this article considers that Alarc & oacute;n was aware of the power of literature to influence society. Therefore, he used his literary work to propagate a conservative ideology that condemned disorderly social mobility and criticized liberalism. This research aims to demonstrate that, with his idealized portrait of the rural and semirural world, Alarc & oacute;n defended that, if they embraced the principles of Catholicism, discarded the teachings of the Enlightenment and romanticism and freed themselves from state interference, the traditional elites and the popular classes would build a symbiotic relationship
