This article offers a theoretical reflection on security as an essential humanright. Through a multidimensional analysis, it explores how security isconceived in the context of human rights in order to achieve greaterunderstanding and awareness of the intersectionality between security andhuman rights. The objective is to systematize the theoretical foundations thatsupport the study of citizen security and human security as human rights-based paradigms. Concepts related to security and human rights are addressed,different theoretical perspectives are analyzed and the main approaches andchallenges in the study of security from a human rights perspective are presented.The methodology used was qualitative, applying methods such as analysis-synthesis, induction-deduction, a sociological approach and as well abibliographic review in the field of criminal law and criminology, at anexploratory level. It is concluded that citizen security emerges as an approachthat goes beyond the mere repression of crime, promoting co-responsibilitybetween the State and individuals in the peaceful coexistence and developmentof communities and that human security represents a significant advance byovercoming previous perspectives centered on the State, focusing on theprotection of human rights and the identification of the basic pillars to ensurethe stability and protection of people.
