The study objective is to explain the socio-historical evolution of a capitalist evangelical ethic (Pentecostal and Neo-Pentecostal) with reference to developmentalism and neo-liberalism in contemporary Chile. For this purpose, the research is oriented by a Weberian inspiration, starting from the projection of the classic thesis on the link between Calvinism and capitalism to a dissimilar historical, theological and economic context. By means of the analysis of the available historical documentation (Pentecostal magazines) and of the interviews conducted (pastors and businessmen) we conclude a certain validity of Weber on the socio-historical importance predestination belief, beyond the evident doctrinal rationalization differences between Calvinism and Pentecostalism. The main contrast is that, contrary to the original theory, the economy prevails as a culture modeling factor, therefore the theoretical interest gives way to functionalist or constructivist theory considerations explain religion as legimitation or systemic stabilization criterion.
