Objective: the objective of this research was to analyze the discussion activities implemented by two Chilean history teachers around public issues, using the contents on national independence, in the context of a social outburst in the country. Methodology: case study methodology was used through interviews and classroom observations. Findings: the aspects that support the decision to implement deliberative activities in adverse social contexts are of importance. For the teachers in this study, they are related to their own conceptions of deliberation and the empathy they felt towards their students to help them express themselves in moments of high social tension. Similarly, although connecting past and present can be particularly complex given the emotional attachment of students to the contingency that affects them, it is an exercise that allows to explore some links in order to better understand the conflicts that are currently affecting society. In this sense, the teachers' decision to use content from the more distant past, such as the national independence, can be a contribution in this regard, if one points out the similarities that remain valid in time.
