The increasing arrival of migrants to Chile during the last ten years not only implies a demographic change, but also in the imaginary and discursive plane, reconfiguring the bases of Chilean identity, anchored in a miscegenation conceived as binary and static. We briefly explore how national identity has been constructed in other Latin American countries to suggest how the current recomposition of Chilean cultural identity can be analyzed. We argue that the context of constituent process in which Chile finds itself problematizes “the question of miscegenation”. We account for the greater hybridity that “Chilenidad” has recently acquired, based on the residence of Latin American migrants, and we analyze the participation of the migrant communities in the constituent discussion, which puts citizenship limited to the nationality, also valuing the neighborhood and roots.
