In Chile, a stage of population aging has been consolidated since the end of the 20th century. This demographic transition stands out for the increase in life expectancy and chronic degenerative diseases, the reduction in birth, mortality and fertility rates; that is, more years with a lower quality of life. Public policies aimed at preserving functionality and autonomy within the framework of positive aging fluctuate between biomedical approaches and the social determination of health for the promotion of a healthy life and the prevention of osteosarcopenia. This geriatric syndrome does not have care guaranteed by the State, nor prevalence records, breaking down into the main pathologies that comprise it; that is, sarcopenia and osteoporosis. To characterize the type of approach that underlies public policies to prevent the loss of functionality in older people, different sources of information were reviewed, such as scientific articles, laws and technical documents developed by the Ministry of Health of Chile. In conclusion, it was possible to demonstrate, from the Public Policies analyzed in this research, the pre-eminence of the biomedical approach, ignoring the importance of the social determination of life and health. In the context of the Constituent Process, it was proposed to rethink public health and social security policies to respond effectively to the problem, aiming at strengthening health promotion and a better quality of life, throughout the life cycle.
