Abstract

Blue whales are the largest living animal and became endangered due to whaling. We found three major groupings of blue whales using high-resolution population genomics: the eastern Pacific, Indo-western Pacific, and Antarctic blue whales. Within these groupings, there was divergence between the eastern North and eastern South Pacific; between the eastern Indian Ocean, the western South Pacific, and the northern Indian Ocean; and no divergence within the Antarctic. The study reinforces that population structure needs to be well understood to conserve the diversity within species. image

The IWC Southern Ocean Research Partnership (IWC-SORP), Sea World Research and Rescue Foundation Incorporated (SWRRFI), Winifred Violet Scott Charitable Trust (WVSCT) and Flinders University provided funding for genomic data collection, genomic analyses or a combination. The biopsy samples were from multiple sources. Sampling off Australia was funded largely through the Australian Marine Mammal Centre within the Australian Antarctic Division in the Australian Federal Government. The IWC provided biopsy samples from the Antarctic, Madagascar and northern Chile, which were collected during IWC cruises under the International Decade of Cetacean Research (IDCR) and Southern Ocean Whale and Ecosystem Research (SOWER) cruises. Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) in La Jolla, California, provided samples from the eastern North Pacific, tropical Pacific and the Maldives. We thank Kelly Robertson for organizing subsamples of these IWC and SWFSC samples, which are held by SWFSC (see Supporting Information). We also thank Rochelle Constantine for organizing subsamples of the New Zealand samples. Open access publishing facilitated by Flinders University, as part of the Wiley - Flinders University agreement via the Council of Australian University Librarians.
