This article aims to address the need to incorporate active parental digital mediation into the so-called parental skills or competencies, as they are differentiated in the literature. A systematic review focused on the last 5 years, primarily on early childhood and the effects of digital mediation, is utilized. The findings underscore the importance of including active parental digital mediation as a necessary parental competence or parenting skills in the 21st century. This would require parents, caregivers, or primary caretakers to acquire skills in this area in addition to the ‘classic’ skills described in the literature. This presents a challenge in the socio-cultural context, given the effects of the pandemic, the overuse of technology, and the limited digital literacy in adults. Recognizing it as part of parental competencies or skills would highlight its significance and could lead to its inclusion in public policies and psychoeducation programs.
