In this article, we analyse the subjectivities of psychosocial practitioners who implement social policies in Chile. We focus on how the neoliberal character of these policies crystallises an awkward professional subjectivity. From Positioning Theory and based on the discourse analysis of 20 in-depth interviews, we observe that practitioners take on six subject positions: machinic, self-sacrificing, defeatist, empathetic, technocratic and agentic. We define these positions by their primary purpose, by how the users of psychosocial programmes and the professionals are identified, and by the function attributed to the intervention. In the discursive management of these positions, we also find dilemmatic moments in which different positions are taken simultaneously and in conflict. We review the relationship between neoliberal rationality and the management of these positions, as well as the theoretical-practical implications of our analysis.
