Considering the importance of the regions in the national fisheries and aquaculture sector, the Chilean regional Input-output Matrices and their employment coefficients were estimated to estimate the indirect employment associated with the production and processing of marine resources. The estimated indirect employment at the national level, generated by extractive fishing, aquaculture, and manufacturing of sea resources, was 39,225 people in 2018 (for every two direct jobs generated by the sector, one indirect job was generated in other sectors of the economy). The regions with the highest contribution to the indirect employment generation are Biobío, Los Lagos, Aysén and Magallanes. About 80% of the estimated indirect employment was generated outside the region where the fishing or aquaculture activity occurs. The analysis allowed knowing the regional interrelation in economic terms and identifying the effect of public policies on employment in the sector under study.
