The article presents a discussion about some distinctions between traditional history and new history and sets up criteria to differentiate the new history from the critical history of psychology, arguing that the latter requires a social theory to support its critique. Finally, key aspects of Axel Honneth's theory of recognition are laid out, highlighting his contributions to the constitution of a theoretical approach for a critical history of psychology.
