This article analyzes the evolution and expression of the environmental policies of Chile, Ecuador and Brazil, taken as archetypal cases of the Latin American region, fundamentally for the period of time that elapses between the Rio-92 Conference and Rio plus 20. In this way, it is exposed that the main characteristic of the environmental policy of this region, typically of the South, has been its permanent tension with the environmental perspectives of the North.
