Black carbon (BC) is a byproduct emitted by incomplete combustion processes, especially fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning, that is part of the atmospheric particulate matter (PM). Because BC is part of PM and has a shorter half-life, it presents strong spatial gradients. This fact determines that the consequent radiative forcing has greater implications on a regional scale, where some areas and ecosystems could result more impacted. Thus, it is essential to know the levels of BC in the atmosphere of cryospheric environments. This information is particularly scarce in remote sites of Chile, especially in snow and ice-covered area, as the Chilean Central Andes. In this sense, the development of a local atmospheric emissions inventory (AEI) is the first step in providing up-to-date data to evaluate BC effects quantitatively. An AEI of the road transport sector has been developed for an area from the Chilean Central Andes, named Portillo. The spatial resolution of the inventory could be adapted for modeling the BC processes in the atmosphere through air quality models. Monthly gridded emission data sets could also be prepared by combining the AEI with GIS tools. To improve the BC emission estimates, local emission factors and activity data should be improved. The AEI could be improved by comparing modeled emission estimates (providing the inventory as input to air quality models) with the observed data.
