Objective: To determine the levels of empathy and its dimensions in midwifery students through the course factor. Methodology: Exploratory, cross-sectional and observational study. It was carried out at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Atacama in 2018. A sample of 182 students (91% of the population) was studied. Empathy levels were assessed using the Jefferson Empathy Scale. The dependent variable, level of empathy and the independent variable, the course. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Levene tests, Cronbach's alpha, intraclass correlation coefficient and Mood were applied. Results: The median of the observed results was 120 with minimum values of 112 and maximum of 135 points. No significant differences (p >0.05) were found when comparing empathy levels and their dimensions between the courses studied. Of the three dimensions studied, the median of the dimension «ability to put yourself in the other's place» was 12 points; if the maximum possible number of points that this dimension can reach is 21, then the median represents only 57.14% ([12/21] x 100) of the maximum achievable point value. Conclusions: The levels of empathy in the analyzed students are relatively high and maintain the same levels of empathy in the different courses. The phenomenon of empathic decline is not manifested.
