Global university rankings have become a benchmark for the quality of the higher education system, constituting a relevant factor in the determination of institutional policies and strategies. However, the presence of Latin American universities in these rankings is scarce, with new classifications emerging to measure the regional reality. In view of the above, the purpose of the work is to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the Latin American rankings to understand, first, if there is similarity in the categorical ordering of the institutions. Second, to determine the underlying factors that are measured by the QS ranking of Latin America and that define the institutional quality. The analysis focused on 2016, and statistical techniques were applied such as correlation coefficients, overlapping and analysis of main components. The results indicate similarities between the classifications of the different rankings, identifying four dimensions that would define the quality of these institutions, generating a segmentation of the universities. This evidence constitutes useful information for the definition of institutional efforts.
