Pain is one of the symptoms that most affects and worries people and one of the causes of most frequent medical consultation. While acute pain has a protective function, this is lost when the pain becomes chronic or persistent, and no longer has an adaptive value. Currently, there is a lot of evidence that shows the relevance of psychological and social factors in the perpetuation of pain, when this isn't onchological pain, wich has different characteristics. In chronic pain, alterations in physical systems can lead to behavioral changes, determined by changes in neural circuits caused by an altered psychological processing. The complexity of the neurophysiological mechanisms, involved in the maintenance of chronic pain, explains that simple therapies, they often fail in obtaining relief, and greater efficiency of the multidisciplinary treatments, compared with conventional medical treatments has been observed. There are environmental factors and personality traits that make easy the pain chronification. The success of a good program of diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain, both outpatient and inpatients, depends largely, of the diagnostic elaboration carried out on team work, as well as the therapeutic decision based on a comprehensive and individualized case study of each particular patient. The realization of this task can not be accomplish optimally, without the involvement of a multidisciplinary team.
