Together with other basic predispositions, the level of political knowledge that citizens have is a central element in the process of formation and transmission of political opinions. Despite the relevance of such knowledge, no studies have been carried out in Chile to measure and describe Chileans' political knowledge and the factors associated with higher or lower knowledge levels. Two national surveys conducted by the Centro de Estudios Públicos in 2010 (N = 1,495) and 2011 (N = 1,554), which employed probability sampling and included respondents aged 18 and older, were used to inquire into knowledge levels and their determinants. After conducting linear correlation and regression analyses, and consistently with the literature reviewed, results show that levels of political knowledge in Chile are low on average and that such knowledge is very unequally distributed. The main factors that determine variations in knowledge levels in Chile are education, age, media consumption, and frequency of political conversations.
