Abstract

Being placed within the ring of fire, Chile as a developing country constantly has to deal with the effects of natural disasters and the destruction of dwellings and key infrastructure. Consequently, the need for shelter and emergency housing in large quantities are part of the recovery strategy in the period of reconstruction. Social copping in the aftermath requires not only basic shelters as an immediate response but also, sustainable development of emergency post-disaster housing is required. The latter might consider future additions and improvements with a life span of several years. Taking the above into consideration, the University of Bio-Bio in Chile, has organized and developed the ZEMCH workshop 2019. The workshop was focused on post-disaster housing community development, counting 20 participants with an interesting mixture of professional fields. By comparing the outputs set forth by the workshop with the emergency housing already built in Chile, a great improvement was detected due to the addition of the Custom and Zero Energy variables. Therefore, a survey was conducted in order to quantify the participants perception of the collaborative work done by each group. The results show that the effect of ZEMCH workshop on multidisciplinary collaboration to create efficient and innovative project proposals was positive, there where low levels of conflict and high levels of value from day one to day five. Further improvements could be made as to include a broader sample of participants, considering future inhabitants, and home manufacturers to participate in ZEMCH workshop.
