Today, most domestic waste in the shape of containers ends up in landfills and in natural surroundings, occupying more physical space than its weight merits. Only a small portion of these containers falls into the category known as clamshells, used in fruit exports/imports, which are particularly difficult for the consumer to compact. There is an evident need to reverse this situation preferably tackling it from the design phase onward while, in parallel, changing laws for countries to incorporate sustainable life-cycle solutions into their packaging, In the present case-study, eco-design was applied to clamshell packaging and integrated into its design and manufacture, reducing the original volume by 60 percent, thereby allowing the consumer to easily collapse the container and thus facilitating its being discarded or recycled.
